White Teeth
By Makano

History has a way of baring its teeth, either grinning with happiness or gnashing in pain. White Teeth, MAKANO’s first solo exhibition in Kampala, fearlessly reckons with the past as he tackles the present realities of the Congo through striking visual narratives. In this exhibition, MAKANO presents an unfiltered dialogue between history, identity and power as he explores the resilience and dignity of the Congolese people in the face of brutality and oppression.

This body of work does not whisper; it roars. It captures colonial violence, the exploitation of resources and the silent screams of the forgotten. The artwork is not just about Congo, it is about power, accountability and the interconnected fate of all nations.

MAKANO urges the world to confront its brutal truths and to recognise the humanity behind global political and economic stories. In the face of the ongoing crisis in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, paint, collage, and canvas are his instruments of choice to not only speak truth to power but also stand in solidarity with his countrymen and highlight the powerful will of the people living in the bleeding heart of Africa

About The Artist

MAKANO is a Congolese artist whose work is deeply intertwined with history, identity, and power. Born and raised in the Democratic epublic of Congo, his artistic practice reflects the country’s complex past and present, exploring themes of resilience, injustice, and defiance. His work is both a confrontation and a reservation of culture. A fearless reclamation of narratives often silenced or overlooked. MAKANO does not shy away from difficult truths; instead, he amplifies them, forcing his audience to engage with the weight of history and its ongoing consequences.

For MAKANO, art is a form of resistance. It is a means of archiving the past while demanding accountability in the present. Most of his works are created by writing his thoughts in the three languages he speaks: Swahili, English and French. In 2021, Makano won the Positive Memories art contest organized by Faces Up Uganda, and since then, his works have been exhibited in various locations in Kampala and Masaka in Uganda as well as Tanzania, Ghana, South Africa, Italy, France and the United States.
